One of my New Years resolutions is to write eyechow posts more regularly, and to catch up with myself. I’m still posting about places and food from over a year ago! I almost never make resolutions because I know I just won’t keep them, but I’m serious about this one!
So, here’s a post from Portland, Oregon, last December (yes, 2013). I felt like my first trip to this awesome city wouldn’t be complete without a stop at famous Voodoo Donut.
My mom and I walked to the original location one cold evening. The brick walls have gold glitter on them! I was already won over.
The line was crazy! It looped around a couple of times and luckily it moved pretty fast, but we were still there for quite a while. It’s open 24/7; I wonder what the busiest and least busy times are.
The interior is super funky and fun. The owners apparently learned the art of making donuts in California, but their website says the flew in “Voodoo Oil” from down south, and the interior reminds me of New Orleans.
It’s awesome that they have their products in a rotating display case so you can see all your options (and your mouth can start watering). They’re all so fun looking! I wanted to get the Voodoo Doll Donut since it just looks awesome, but it was filled with jelly which I don’t like in my donut.
My mom and I got two to split: Bacon Maple Bar doughnut © (raised yeast doughnut with maple frosting and bacon on top) and Orangatang doughnut (raised yeast doughnut dipped in vanilla frosting, Tang with a side of orange sprinkles). I usually don’t like fruity flavors or deserts that much, but Tang is a total throwback to childhood when I would go to babysitters’ or teachers’ houses (it was definitely not allowed in my house, but I loved it).
The Tang donut was pretty awesome and tasted just like Tang (duh). The donut was light and airy. So good!
The maple bacon was also really good, but looking back on it, I think I’d prefer just a sweet flavor, no meat. But, you can’t beat that sweet and salty maple/bacon combo. I’m glad we tried it. Voodoo Donut is just a super fun place that makes products that as far as I know from these two, live up to the hype.
