La Espiguita Tacos

Kiyo and I always walk past the very small, unassuming La Espiguita restaurant on the way to Broadway, one of the main drags in Astoria. It’s awkwardly located right underneath the N/Q elevated subway line, so it’s easy to breeze past in an effort to quickly get past the  overwhelmingly loud 31st street. One weekend afternoon on our way to the grocery store in between loads of laundry, we walked by it again and finally decided to stop in for cheap tacos (only $2 each!). There is a TV featuring soccer games and it’s very small and hot, but luckily our food came out quickly.

I was raised by a woman obsessed with Mexican food (or should I just say margaritas and guacamole?) so Mexican is almost like comfort food to me. We ordered three tacos: chicken, chorizo and spicy pork. They were so stuffed that the fillings fell out as we ate; not exactly what you’d expect for such cheap tacos. The chorizo taco was the best but they were all well-seasoned and weren’t dry, which is my pet peeve with tacos. The tangy green hot sauce on the table was tasty too. Overall, this place is a great value and has an authentic atmosphere and tasty food. We will definitely be back!
